Photographic exhibition at the hotel Casadelmar: Kourtney Roy

Kourtney Roy was born in 1981 in Canada. She completed her art and design studies and graduated from Emily Carr University in 2004. As both a model and a photographer, she devotes relatively more of her time to photography, which she is drawn to because of its immediacy and its strong link with the real world. She began taking photos of herself because she found it easier to portray her characters herself rather than direct models. Whether it is as a housewife, secretary, Wonder Woman or femme fatale, Kourtney Roy examines female stereotypes and enters the parallel world of their lives. She has no real sources of inspiration except those provided by life itself, the people she meets, moments of everyday life and certain passages from books… Playing, experimenting and having fun are the keys to her personal research in this unusual form of photography. Her self-portraits are like movies with a single image.

After a number of exhibitions and some major awards, she won the prestigious “Carte Blanche PMU 2013” prize and the works she completed as part of this prize will be exhibited at the BAL show from 30 April to 11 May 2014 and published by Filigranes. The world of Kourtney Roy is sometimes compared to that of Cindy Sherman or William Eggleston, with whom she shares the same extreme fascination for colour.
